Literary Magazine Workshop
Literary Magazine Workshop
WRT 162 is titled "Literary Magazine Workshop" and is offered every spring semester at West Campus.
Each issue is curated, edited, and designed entirely by students enrolled in WRT 162.
Students learn and get hands-on experience in editing, curating, publishing, business promotion, and project management as they produce and promote SandScript.
WRT 162 is part of the AGEC-General Education requirements and the English/Liberal Arts Pathway for transfer.
Speak with your program advisor about how WRT 162 fits into your pathway and educational plan. More information about PCC's Liberal Arts degree transfer programs is found here.
How WRT 162 Creates SandScript
WRT 162 consists of evaluating magazine submissions, designing the layout, and promoting the publication of SandScript. Students enrolled in the class occupy specific editorial roles and collaborate to create SandScript over the spring semester. As a team, WRT 162 students manage all aspects of the magazine's development and production:
The Editor-In-Chief oversees all aspects of the magazine's production: they guide editorial discussions, collaborate with the staff in submission decisions and design choices, and coordinate with editors regarding edits of individual pieces. The editor-in-chief is the public face of the magazine and manages communication with all contributors.
The Assistant Editor and Managing Editor organize submissions, track voting, and oversee editorial responsibilities and tasks among the staff in coordination with the editor-in-chief.
The Prose, Poetry, and Visual Arts Lead Editors guide discussions of genre submissions and work with contributors to edit pieces before publication.
The Industry Outreach Coordinators manage the promotion of SandScript inside and outside the college, and promote SandScript submissions and events. Specialties include merchandise lead, marketing lead, social media manager, and events coordinator.
The Design Editor is responsible for creating the magazine copy and collaborates with the staff to arrange the layout, design, and aesthetics. This paid position is open to Pima students and is posted to Pima Jobs in the fall semester.
All students serve as Genre Readers to review prose, poetry, and visual arts submissions without knowing the contributor's identity. All submissions are discussed with care by the readers, regardless of if the piece is selected for publication. Readers all share in copyediting duties and proof the final versions of the magazine prior to publication.
From curating submissions to designing and promoting the magazine, students in WRT 162 run the SandScript show!
All students read and "blind vote" on all submissions. Submissions are accepted based on votes and discussion. We celebrate when we vote unanimously for a piece!
The edition comes together over the course of many reading sessions. WRT 162 students discuss the magazine design and make big decisions as a team, from the order of works to the cover art.
The student design editor works one-on-one with the publishing press to check the proofs before sending the magazine to print.
When the print edition is ready, we unbox and celebrate this big accomplishment as a team!
Magazine Promotion
Once the issue is ready to print, the staff industry outreach coordinators get to work promoting the event across Pima, on social media and in local venues.
SandScript's Unveiling Event
The hard work of the class culminates in our issue unveiling party, where we celebrate our contributors and recognize their accomplishment.
